Making Great Business Card Logos

If you are looking to design business card logos here are a few tips for you to create a winning image. The first thing to remember is that you are not designing a logo just for your business card. You should design a business logo for all your business needs. Your logo will carry your image far beyond the business card.

Good business card logos should have the following characteristics:

Minimal colours - It is important not to use too many colours on your logo. 3 to 4 colors is a good guide for the maximum number of colours to have on your logo. This does not usually include white, which is a neutral colour. If too colorful it says you are an amateur and if it’s too dull you will not be noticed. Getting the right colour balance is important.

Good choice of colours - The choice of colours you use in your business card logo design depends on your business. Bright colours are generally good for fun, exciting or creative businesses. Businesses that provide professional services generally use a milder colour palette. There are exceptions when bright colour can be used to good effect. Our logo is an example.

Easily recognizable- Your logo should not be a puzzle. Sometimes people make the mistake of making their logo so complex you need a PhD to figure it out. This is a no-no. Few people have the time for this kind of exercise and will not remember your logo if it’s too complicated to understand easily. Keep it simple, interesting and recognizable.

Easy to duplicate- It is likely that your logo will appear on a lot more than just your business card. Therefore the design should be easily to duplicate in order to allow it to be placed on different media. For example, billboards, car stickers, letterheads, pens, t-shirts and badges. The possibilities are endless. Generally, the more small details the logo has the harder it would be to duplicate and use on other media. Also test your logo to see how clear it is when viewed in grayscale or black and white. It will need to be printed in just these colors at some point.

A good tag line- The tag line is not a part of the logo as such, but a good line can reinforce your logo and explain your business positioning better.

Reinforce your business image. - When someone sees your logo, they should get a sense of what your business positioning is. A logo for a kids’ theme park will be very different from one for a financial consultant. The kids’ theme park logo will portray a lot of fun and may be quite festive. The financial consultant may want to build a sense of trust and confidence in a client. Ensure that the design of your logo portrays the image you want to convey.

You can create your own logo for your business. Alternatively, you can hire a professional graphics person or a company to do your business card logos. If you are not too familiar with graphic design techniques and software it is probably best not to attempt do it on your own. Your business is worth the money you will spend on a well designed logo.
